Jonathan C. Ulmer: Air Traffic Controller with the FAA

Jonathan Ulmer reminded us that it was important to stay in control of yourself!

- he works at the Syracuse Airport in that big tower,

- he makes about $60,000 each year,

- his job is to control airplanes, sometimes he does it with remote control, sometimes he flies planes too,

- it is important to be able to concentrate because there are a lot of voices and sometimes yelling at work,

- he works about 8 hours each day, sometimes at night, 

- it was cool that he has worked with military forces to fly airplanes,

- he went to college for six years and three more years of training,

- he works with radar to track the pilots and their planes, so you have to be able understand how symbols and technology works, 

- communication and confidence are important because you have to be able to insist that pilots do things for safety even when it  is hard for them to do,

We told him that Johnshin wants to be an aircraft controller, Luis wants to be a rapper, Cleveland wants to be a judge (for Plan A), then he wants to be President of the United States of America (for Plan B), Sabastian wants to be in the Army like his father, who also makes music. 

We hope to visit Jonathan at the airport sometime soon.

Él nos recordó la importancia de estar en control de nuestras vidas.

- Jonathan trabaja en el aeropuerto de Syracuse en la torre principal.

- El gana aproximadamente $60.000 al año.

- Su trabajo es básicamente dirigir a los pilotos desde la torre de control.  A veces el también pilotea aviones.

- En su trabajo es muy importante mantener la concentración porque hay muchas personas tratando de orientarse al mismo tiempo.

- Él trabaja ocho horas diarias algunas veces en el turno de la noche.

- Fue interesante para nosotros que el en algún momento de su vida trabajo con la fuerza aérea para poder pilotear aviones.

- Él fue a la universidad durante seis años y luego estudio tres años adicionales de entrenamiento para trabajar de controlador aéreo.

- Él trabaja con radares para comunicarse con aviones y sus pilotos y para esto el necesita tener conocimientos tecnológicos y  de muchos códigos y símbolos.

Tener buena habilidad de comunicación y confianza en el trabajo que él hace es muy importante.  Para así poder  guiar a los pilotos con todas las medidas de seguridad cuando ellos tienen problemas durante sus vuelos.

Le dijimos a Jonathan que Johnshin quiere trabajar como controlador de aviones, Luis quiere ser un rapero famoso. Cleveland quiere ser un juez ( Plan A ) y luego ser el presidente de los Estados Unidos  de América ( Plan B), Sabastian quiere pertenecer a las fuerzas armadas como su padre que también es músico.

Esperamos en algún momento visitar a Jonathan en su trabajo del Aeropuerto de Syracuse.

John Heard - Community Artist

It was really cool when he told us that he recycles lots of things and makes designs, and art, and rain sticks.

He told us: 

- that if you want to be a good artist you have to love art and you have to keep making art,

- you need to love nature for many reasons,

- keep going to school for all of the years that it takes so that you can write and draw,

- he asked us what we want to be when we are older, Yaritza wants to be a dancer and if she gets fired maybe a teacher, Natanael wants to be a hip hop dancer and if he does not get famous he will be a hurricane scientist, Edgar wants to be a hip hop dancer and if he can't he wants to be a scientist and spy who fights crime, Luis G. wants to be an artist and an astronaut,

- being bilingual helps him to collaborate with other people, like when we work together,

- it is important to work together as a group and it is also very hard,

- always make good choices and do the right thing because when you have to make decisions you need to support them.

Nos pareció muy interesante como el  señor Heard con objetos de reciclaje diseña y elabora muchos proyectos artísticos.

El nos dijo: 

- Que si queremos ser artistas tenemos que hacer arte y sentir mucho amor por el arte.  

- También agrego, que tenemos que amar la naturaleza en el medio del arte por muchas razones y continuar nuestra educación todos los años necesarios  para poder ser buenos escritores y pintores.

- El señor Hear nos pregunto que nos gustaría ser en nuestro futuro: Yaritza quiere ser una bailarina y en caso que la despidan entonces seria maestra. Natanael quiere ser un bailarín de hip hop y si su sueño  no se cumple entonces seria un meteorólogo. Edgar también quiere ser un bailarín de hip pop y en caso que no tenga la oportunidad el será un agente secreto del FBI para combatir el crimen organizado. Luis G le gustaría ser un artista y un astronauta.

- Es importante ser bilingüe el señor Hear nos dijo, porque esto le permite colaborar con otros artistas mas fácilmente. 

- A veces  es importante saber como trabajar en conjunto con otros pero ocasionalmente puede ser un poco complicado. 

- Siempre tomen las mejores decisiones que puedan y hagan las cosas lo mejor posible, nos dijo,  Mr. Heard porque así podemos aplicarlas de una manera ideal y adecuada en nuestro futuro.

Timothy Bond - Artistic Director and Actor at Syracuse Stage

Tim Bond told us that if we have a dream we can get it by going to college and doing good in life.

We asked him how long it takes and what it takes to be an actor. He said:

- getting a good job is important - not just throwing your life away, 

- he has a daughter and she is ten years old and fifth grade,

- he is not wealthy, but he makes good money and can be comfortable,

- he works about 48 hours a week,

- he does not work with the same people all of the time, different people come for different plays,

- you have to practice a lot when you are an actor and a director,

- you have to know how to communicate with actors, so writing and talking is important, 

He asked us what we want to be Shy'rel wants to be an actor and director (he is writing a play right now), Arianna wants to be a singer like Beyonce, Leanna wants to be a doctor and she will have to go to medical school.

Tim nos  dijo que podemos alcanzar  todos nuestros  sueños  si nos preparamos  con estudios universitarios y haciendo lo correcto en nuestras vidas.

Nosotros le preguntamos  cuanto tiempo se necesita y que se requiere para ser un artista como él. El nos respondió:

- Adquirir un trabajo es lo más importante.  Y no perder el tiempo sin hacer nada con nuestras vidas.

- El tiene una hija  de diez años y está en quinto grado como nosotros.

- El no es rico, pero gana lo suficiente para vivir confortable.

- El trabaja aproximadamente 48 horas a la semana.

- Tim no trabaja con las mismas personas todo el tiempo,  porque las obras de teatro cambian todo el tiempo.

- Hay que practicar mucho cuando eres actor y director a su vez.

- Es muy importante la comunicación con los actores así como las habilidades en la escritura y la comunicación verbal.

El nos preguntó que  queríamos hacer con nuestras vidas:  Shy’rel  quiere ser un artista y director y en la actualidad el está escribiendo el libreto de una obra de teatro. Arianna quiere ser una cantante como  Beyonce y Leanna quiere ser médico y para eso tendrá que asistir a la escuela de medicina.

Christie Bravos - Convention & Services Director at the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Center

Christie Bravos told us a lot about working in her business.

She said:
- she went to two colleges,
- she has a high school diploma and a college degree,
- works every day except Saturdays and Sundays,
- you have to be friendly and outgoing and organized to do her work,
- to do her job, she needs to use math and she has to be creative,
- she has been working for ten years,
- she helps international visitors too.

Ella nos contó muchas cosas de cómo trabajar en su negocio.

- Ella asistió a dos universidades diferentes.

- Ella tiene un título de bachillerato y otro universitario.

- Ella trabaja todos los días menos los fines de semana.

- Para poder realizar su trabajo de una mejor forma ella nos contó que hay que ser bien amigable, tener mucha energía y ser muy organizado en todo sentido.

- En su trabajo se requiere un conocimiento de las matemáticas además de mucha creatividad.

- Ella ha estado trabajando continuamente por 10 años.

- Parte de su trabajo es ayudar a visitantes de otras naciones en Syracuse.

Matthew Jackson, Zorangelis, Martin, Gisselle, and Yassel.

Matt got his job by accident, he went to school for one thing and wound up doing something else.

- he told us how to get a good job,

- it is important go to high school and college, you need an education for his business,

- it is important to use both languages (Spanish and English) so people understand you,

- he has to solve problems to help people,

- you don't always talk face-to-face to people, so you can communicate by phone and internet,

- he works 40 hours each week.

Matt encontró su trabajo accidentalmente. El decidió asistir a la universidad  por una cosa y termino estudiando algo completamente diferente.

- El nos enseñó cómo encontrar un trabajo.

- La importancia de asistir y terminar  estudios secundarios y universitarios. Porque sin estos estudios no se puede trabajar en este tipo de negocio.

- Es importante ser bilingüe (Español e Inglés) para poder comunicarnos con un rango de personas más amplio.

- El tiene que resolver problemas para ayudar a otras personas.

- No siempre tienes la oportunidad  de hablar con clientes personalmente por ende la habilidad de hacerlo por teléfono o por la internet es importante.

- El trabaja alrededor  de 40 horas a la semana.

Ellen Blalock: Photographer and Journalist for the Syracuse Post Standard

Ellen Blalock told us:

- she works about 6-8 hours each day,

- in order to be a journalist she needed a degree and go to college for journalism,

- to be a good photographer you have to be on time so that you can get the job done with other people,

- some journalists make about $40,000  each year,

- being biligual is important because we can get lots of jobs in the U.S. and it is very valuable!

- she asked us what we want from the future, and we said, "We want to meet more stars."

- she makes video tapes and photos for the news and for the newspaper,

- she showed us a video about a rapper that was on the news.

- Ella trabaja aproximadamente de seis a ocho horas al día.

- Para ella poder ser una periodista tuvo que asistir a la universidad y obtener un diploma en periodismo.

- Para ser un fotógrafo exitoso Ellen nos contó que hay que ser muy puntual y llegar antes que los demás de esa forma se puede reportar y fotografiar todo lo acontecido.

- Un fotógrafo puede llegar a ganar hasta $40.000 cada año.

- Ser bilingüe es muy importante en la carrera de periodismo y para obtener una gran variedad de trabajos atreves delos Estados Unidos.

- Ellen nos preguntó que nos gustaría  hacer con nuestro futuro, Nosotros le respondimos  “queremos conocer celebridades”

- Ellen elabora videos y toma fotos para las noticias locales y los periódicos de la ciudad.

- Ella nos mostró un video de un rapero que  fue parte de las noticias recientemente.

Shahid: Quiero ser un doctor porque quiero ayudar a muchas personas con sus problemas de salud. El Dr Castro tenía mucha confianza de si mismo y me gusta esa cualidad.

Jonelis:  El Dr Castro me explico todos los años que tendré que estudiar para poder ser un doctor come el, También me dijo que el camino puede ser difícil, pero yo estoy dispuesta a afrontar el reto.

Mara: Quiero ser una doctora porque me gustaría ser respetada por los demás y además se que lo puedo lograr porque tengo una gran personalidad.

Oneta: Con el doctor Castro aprendí lo difícil que puede ser un trabajo de medico por la cantidad de horas que ellos tienen que trabajar. Otra razón que por la cual me gustaría ser medico es que me gustaría trabajar en pediatría porque soy muy buena cuidando bebes y por eso creo poder ser  muy buena pediatra. También aprendimos  que el doctor Castro fue quien nos trajo a l mundo a todos en nuestro grupo.

Shahid: I want to be a doctor because I like to help other people with their health. Dr. Castro was very confident and I like that.

Jonelis: Dr. Castro told me how many years you have to study to be a doctor and how difficult it is sometimes but I am willing to take that risk.

Mara: I want to be a doctor because I want to be respected and I have a strong personality.

Oneta: I learned that being a doctor is difficult and doctors have to work a lot of hours. I also want to be a pediatrician because I am good with babies and that's something that I would like to do. I discovered that Dr. Castro delivered everyone in the group.

Jaime Alicea - Deputy Superintendent of the Syracuse City Schools

Jaime Alicea used to be the Principal at our school!

He told us:

- he had to work very hard to get up to higher levels in the school district,

- it is good to know English and Spanish to talk to kids and parents,

- in order to be a teacher you have to like kids, 

- you have to be honest, be a hard worker, and you have to get along with many people, 

- he loves it when he can make a difference in kids education,

- people in his job can make as much as $100,000 - $150,000,

- he asked us what we wanted to be and Alison said she wanted to be a stylist, Junariah wanted to be a lawyer, Tanisha wanted to be a dance teacher (Tanisha feels very prepared to be a teacher from her babysitting experience).

He loves to take photographs, he went to Puerto Rico and takes pictures of so many interesting things.

El señor Alicea fuel el director de nuestra escuela por un tiempo.

El nos dijo:

- A  le toco que trabajar muy duro para poder alcanzar niveles y posiciones elevadas en nuestro distrito escolar.

- Es importante poder comunicarse en  español e Ingles  para así mantener una buena comunicación con padres e hijos en las escuelas.

- Para ser un buen maestro te tienen que gustar los niños.

- Tienes que ser honesto, trabajar duro y tener buena relaciones con muchas personas.

- El aprecia mucho cuando puedo hacer algo importante por un niño que haga cambiar su vida de alguna manera.

- En su trabajo  se puede ganar  alrededor de$ 100.000- $150.000 al año.

- El nos preguntó que queríamos ser cuando seamos mayores y Alison dijo que quería ser  diseñadora  de modas,  Junariah  quiere ser un abogado. Tanisha quiere ser una profesora de danza (Ella se siente preparada para ser una maestra por su experiencia cuidando niños pequeños).

El le gusta tomar fotografías. Él fue a Puerto Rico y tomo muchas fotos interesantes de lugares atractivos. 

Nathan Strand - Master of Public Relations Student at Syracuse University

- Nathan was once a project coordinator for USAID Funded Health Project

- he went to Africa for his work and when some people tried to braid his hair he was not able to do it because it hurt too much,

- he works long hours every day,

- he speaks French,

- we talked about sports and Emmanuel told him that he does football and basketball,

- Emily told him that she wants to be a singer

- he din't tell us how much money he made but he does like his work very much.

- El fue al África como parte de proyecto de salud y los locales trataron de hacerle las trenzas en su pelo pero fue imposible para el porqué dolía mucho.

Stephanie Costner - Program Manager Say Yes Collegiate Preparatory Academy

- she works every day and even on weekends, about 60 hours a week,

- we think it's nice that she gave us the things like Say Yes, you can do different things like cheerleading,

- she went to undergraduate school at a black school, Virginia State University 

- she can reach more children and parents and meet more people,

- she needs passion, patience, and being smart to get get her job done,

- her creativity is in teaching classes for students,

- she collaborates with school district parents and businesses,

- she works with high school students and helps them get to college,

We made a pledge to go to college: Isabel to be an artist, Shakirt to be a vet and spa masseuse, Jazzmyne to be a basketball player and beautician. We have all girls in our school group and our song is "Who runs the world - girls" by Beyonce.

- Ella trabaja todos los días y a veces los fines de semana, generalmente 60 horas a la semana.

- Es interesante para nosotros que ella trabaje para el programa de SAY YES  porque así nos da la oportunidad a nosotros de poder asistir a varios cursos y instrucciones como la de cheerleading.

- Ella asistió a una universidad para estudiantes afroamericanos en  el estado de Virginia.

- En su trabajo ella tiene la oportunidad de asistir a una gran cantidad de estudiantes y sus padres al mismo tiempo.

- Ella nos contó  que en su trabajo se necesita mucha paciencia, pasión pero además inteligencia para obtener buenos resultados.

- Ella usa mucha creatividad para a la hora de enseñar a sus estudiantes.

- Ella colabora todo el tiempo con los distritos escolares, negocios en la comunidad.

- Ella también trabaja con estudiantes de secundaria y los ayuda a prepararse para asistir a la universidad.

Brian Bromka

Brian Bromka dances a LOT...when he is not selling real estate!

- he knows how to dance and teach salsa, meringue, jazz, tango, and many others,
- he teaches adults and teenagers,
- when he goes to work as a dancer it is often in different places depending on the size of the group,
- you need training and you have to use critical thinking to be a dancer,
- it takes a lot of energy and really good communication skills,
- he told us that it is important to be bilingual to talk and work with dancers, students, and audiences,
- he also told us that being bilingual helps when you go someplace and everyone speaks Spanish, then you know what they are saying,
- creativity comes in when you make your own music or do it in your own way,
- there is collaboration between musicians,
- his real estate job is from 10-4, and then he dances from 6-9pm,
- When we asked him how it was to work with so many people, he said, "It's the best!"

Él se la pasa bailando cuando no esta trabajando en su negocio de bienes de raíces.

- Brian  tiene un buen conocimiento de como enseñar, salsa, merengue, jazz, tango y otros tipos de bailes. 

- Él le enseña a adultos y jóvenes a su vez. 

- Cuando él trabaja como instructor de baile normalmente lo hace en diferentes ubicaciones dependiendo de la cantidad de alumno que tenga en la clase. 

- Para ser un buen bailarín se necesita un buen entrenamiento  y mucho pensamiento critico además que tomo mucha energía y muchas habilidades de comunicación. 

- Brian nos dijo que es muy importante para el ser bilingüe por esto le facilita hablar y trabajar con diferentes bailarines, estudiantes y con cualquier audiencia.  

- Él también nos dijo que cuando él va  a un lugar donde predomina el habla hispana él puede entender fácilmente.  

- La creatividad viene por si sola cuando tienes la oportunidad de crear tu propia música y hacerla de tu propia manera.  

- Él nos dijo que entre músicos siempre hay una colaboración. 

- Él trabaja en bienes de raíces desde las diez hasta las cuatro luego en la noche de seis a nueve enseña salsa. 

- Cuando le preguntamos  que tal era trabajar con tantas personas a la ves, él nos dijo: “ que es fabuloso”

Marcia Rutledge

Marcia Rutledge is both a school psychologist and a jazz vocalist.

-        -  she needed four years of undergraduate school and two more years of graduate school to be a psychologist

-        -  she has been working in many schools and it takes 8-9 hours each day

-        -  to be good at her work, you have to like kids and be interested in their families

-        -  being a musician has helped her to communicate with lots of kinds of people

-        -  she loves jazz and has a cat named “Jazz-min”

Mauricio Casares: Engineer, Computer Specialist, College Teacher

Mauricio showed us the brain of the computer and how it works.

- He works 40 hours each week,

- You have to like math to do what he does,

- He makes a lot of money,

- He loves his work because he can control what happens when he fixes computers,

- You have to like technology,

- You have to be able to work with a team to make new ideas,

- You have to solve problems and design devices,

- You have to use critical thinking to work with your boss,

When he was a child he went to his father's workshop and watched him work on computers to know how things work. He showed us how his technology works and if we were him we would have our own talking computers.

Mauricio nos enseñó el cerebro de una computadora y su funcionamiento.

- El trabaja 40 horas a la semana.

- También nos contó  que las matemáticas son importantes para lo que el hace.

- El gana mucho dinero.

- El le gusta su trabajo porque a la hora de arreglar un ordenador  el es la persona encargada.

- El nos dijo que tenemos que tener pasión por la tecnología.

- El nos habló de la importancia de poder trabajar en equipo para implementar nuevas ideas.

- También nos dijo sobre la importancia de resolver problemas y diseñar  nuevas herramientas de trabajo

- Mauricio nos explicó que para su trabajo el tiene usar un pensamiento crítico y estar en constante comunicación con su jefe.

Cuando Mauricio era pequeño el fue al taller de su padre para observarlo trabajando en ordenadores y así aprender  como el.  El nos enseñó cómo funciona la tecnología  con la que el trabaja y si fuéramos  el tendríamos un ordenador que nos hablara.

Roberto Perez: International Relations, Salsa Dancer, & DJ

Roberto Perez  is in international relations AND he's a dancer and a DJ.

It was interesting to hear Mr. Perez talk about being a DJ and a salsa dancer. You have to be a good listener for both because your ears and head are paying to the beat and your body is paying attention to the moves.

- He took four years in college,

- He works about 30 hours each week,

- He reminded us that being bilingual is a huge benefit for life and work,

- He teaches adults how to dance,

- We asked him what kinds of politics he had to study, and he told us about NGOs (non-government organizations), foreign policy, and Latin American politics,

- You need to be passionate and personal and you need great communication skills because you have to be able to be understood in many different places and ways.

His work is amazing because he can work with so many different kinds of people.

Estudio Relaciones Internacionales, también es profesor de danzas Caribeñas y DJ.

Fue muy interesante escuchar  el señor Pérez hablar  de su trabajo como bailarín de salsa y  de DJ. El nos dijo  la importancia de tener un “buen oído “para las dos profesiones porque los oídos y la mente están conectados con el ritmo mientras que el cuerpo reacciona a los movimientos  de la música.

- El Estudio cuatro años en la universidad.

- El trabaja aproximadamente 30 horas a la semana.

- El nos recordó la importancia de ser bilingüe y los grandes beneficios que esto puede tener en nuestras vidas futuras.

- El también enseña a personas adultas bailes latinoamericanos.

- Nosotros le preguntamos si estudio política en su carrera y el nos explicó sobre  política exterior en Latinoamérica y de organizaciones de gobierno sin fines de lucro.

- El también nos  contó cómo hay que tener mucho interés en lo que queramos hacer  con nuestro futuro.  También la importancia de tener la habilidad de comunicarnos con otros  para que nos puedan entender en sitios y situaciones diferentes.

Su trabajo es muy interesante porque el  tiene la oportunidad de trabajar con muchas personas diferentes.

Paul Nojaim: Owner of Nojaim's Supermarket

Paul Nojaim owns and runs the grocery store that is right next door to our school. 

He told us that his parents inspired him.

- To own a store you have to graduate from high school and college,

- You have to be trustworthy,

- He works a LOT of hours every week,

- He doesn't have regular work hours, they are all different every day,

- Nojaims is the first store in our neighborhood to carry Spanish food,

- He told us when we are older than 14 he would give us a job,

- If we work with him, we will be able to make our own sauces and stuff.

Paul Nojaim trabaja y a su vez es el dueño del supermercado que se encuentra a un costado de nuestra escuela.

- El nos contó que sus padres le dieron la inspiración de  trabajar y abrir el supermercado.

- Para ser un dueño de supermercado se necesita mínimo tener un diploma de bachillerato y de la universidad.

- Para un trabajo así se necita ser muy responsable.

- El trabaja MUCHAS horas  todas las semanas.  

- El no tiene un horario en particular, sus horas de trabajo cambian por día.

- Nojaims es el primer supermercado que ofrece productos Latinoamericanos.

- El nos dijo que cuando seamos mayores de 14 años nos ofrecerá trabajo en su supermercado.

- Si algún día trabajamos para el tendremos la posibilidad de hacer nuestra propia receta de salsa.

Doce mil años atrás los supermercados aun no existían.

Judge Kate Rosenthal

Aaliyah: My experience was great because I want to be a lawyer and help people when they get arrested. My mom works for Alexander and Catalano and that inspired me to be a lawyer as well.

Terrence: I learned from Kate a lot of things that I need to know to become a lawyer and eventually a judge and all the duties involved. Kate told me how hard the cases are and how much money she can make in a year. I don't want to be a lawyer but I want to be a weapon designer. Kate was the only one that I felt related to what I want to do because weapons are dangerous and people use them the wrong way and get in trouble.

Juan: Kate told me what a weapon could do. I want to be a judge as well and put criminals to jail and have a better society. I want to warn people about right and wrong and Kate taught me that you have to make your own decisions.

Aaliyah, Terrance, Juan, and Kwanasia with Judge Rosenthal

Aaliyah: Mi experiencia con la jueza fue grandiosa porque yo quiero ser abogado defensor y asi poder ayudar a personas cuando son arrestadas injustamente.  También mi madre trabaja para la firma de abogados Alexander y Catalano y eso me  ha ayudado mucho con mi decisión de ser un abogado. 

Terrence: Con la jueza Kate aprendí muchas del las cosas que necesito saber para ser un abogado exitoso y eventualmente un juez y muchas de las habilidades requeridas en este proceso. Kate nos explico lo difícil  y la complejidad de algunos casos. También nos dijo el salario de un abogado en el año.  En realidad yo no quiero ser un abogado sino un diseñador de armas de fuego y La jueza Kate fue la única de los profesionales  que me pareció mas indicada  a lo que yo quiero ser por la razón de que armas de fuego siempre pueden ser peligrosas y muchas personas las usan de forma incorrecta  y les pueden traer problemas con la ley. 

Juan: La jueza Kate  me explico las cosas malas que puede traer el uso de un arma de fuego. Yo quiero ser un Juez como ella y así poder mandar criminales a la cárcel para así tener una mejor sociedad. También me gustaría aconsejar a personas lo que significa lo bien y lo mal hecho y como evitar problemas.  Algo más que aprendí de Kate es que como juez tienes que tomar tus propias decisiones.
