Syracuse Stage Performance & Lauren Unbekant (director) Interview

A theater performance called New Kid, by Syracuse Stage was presented at Seymour School on October 11th. The actors, technical coordinator, and director met with Team 5 students to share their career experiences. Our interview team included:

Writers - Martin & Kashliean
Hosts - Shaddai & Yassel
Photographer - Kwuinasia

In the performance we all noticed:

- being different is hard
- languages that we don't know can sound funny or weird
- acting feels sort of like playing charades, especially when you talk in gibberish
- the stage props were moving blocks and a lighted screen that could move easily
- there were special sound effects that helped us to understand what was going on

The New Kid Cast shared this information with us:

- actors must audition, sort of like an interview, to get the job
- they have to work hard every single day to be good at changing characters and personalities
- they had to rehearse another language (gibberish) to be able to tell a story without workd
- they prepared for the physical movements by doing yoga and exercising
- they all came from different places in the world and came to Syracuse for college
- they had to memorize and pay careful attention to the choreography, which is shared movements
- they had to rely on the sound, prop, and stage managers who worked with technology

The Education Director, Lauren Unbekant shared this  information with us:
- to become a director for performances or for education, she had to go to college and get lots of experience
- she has to be really organized, there are so many details in the office and on the stage
- it is helpful to be thoughtful about what other people need, to be a good leader
- you have to stick with a project (like writing a script) for 6-7 weeks at least
- she has to be efficient, this means getting help to get the job done well and in a short time
- she has to be good at editing and revising her writing making many drafts before she is done
- she reminded us that it made a difference if you keep good support with family and friends
